March 24, 2022: Plant of the Week- Acer macrophyllum (Big Leaf Maple)
The Big Leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 150 ft tall. They can grow fast in moist to dry soil with sun or partial shade. They are ofter found in Douglas-fir forests, often on sites disturbed by fire, clearing or logging at low to moderate elevations. They have ridged bark that is gray-brown and can be a host for ferns, and moss. Their leaves are large, deep lobed with ridges, up to 12″ side and long. Big Leaf Maples can be used as an ornamental tree with leaves that turn brilliant colors in the fall. They provide great shade for backyards and gardens and can provide lots of food for bees an other pollinators.
