Height: This evergreen fern can grow from 3 to 6 ft. tall.

Habitat: Grows best in well drained soil in full sun to full shade.

Foliage: Thick, triangular, rough, lobbed, pointed fronds.

Natural Habitat: Found in moist conifer woods in open to deep shade areas.

Why is it good for my garden? Sword fern is great for almost every garden, easy to grow and has a strong root system that is great for erosion control. The western sword fern spores have many medicinal uses, including relief from the sting of stinging nettles, which comes in handy if an accidental tumble in stinging nettles happens. These ferns are also generally low-maintenance, robust, and reliable, providing green fronds year-round. Its tufts of pointed green fronds make it look natural in a woodland garden. As filler or background for other showy and colorful plants, sword fern can help flowering plants pop out. Works well to fill in those out-of-the-way places like dry shade under rood eaves.
