Lysichiton americanus - Skunk Cabbage

Product Details

Height: This rhizomatous perennial can grow to 3 ft. tall.

Habitat: Grows best in moist to wet soil in full to part shade.

Foliage: Large, waxy, bright green, think, lance shaped emerge from base.

Flowers: Large, yellow, scoop shaped or hood shaped petal sounds a yellow center spike. This flower has a stinky fragrance like skunk thus its name. This smell attracts pollinator. Flower blooms March to July.

Fruits: Long center seed spike turns green to bright red after flower fades.

Natural Habitat: Found in marshes, swamps and wet forest areas.

Why is it good for my garden? Skunk cabbage may not be the best choice for a small yard because of the smell but is a good plant for a wet area. Slow growing at first but once established grows well. This plants roots were eaten and large leaves used to line baskets or cooking pits. Interesting side not these plants are suppose to produce their own heat so in winter will melt the snow around them to survive.
