Height: This multi stem small tree or shrub can grow up to 25 to 30 ft. tall and 25 ft. wide and forms a thicket.
Habitat: Grows best in full sun to shade in moist to wet soil and is flood tolerant.
Foliage: Coarsely toothed dark green leaves that turn yellow in fall.
Flowers: Yellow to green catkin (drooping cylindrical flower cluster).
Fruits: Brown samara (seed surrounded by papery wings to help it fly in the wind)
Bark: Thin bronze to red bark.
Natural Habitat: Found in moist ares and stream banks in lower elevations.
Why is it good for my garden? This small tree or shrub would be good around a pond or in a wet area of your yard. It attracts and is good food for many birds and insects. Flood tolerant makes it great for wetland areas or stream banks.
