Height: Thicket forming broadleaf deciduous plant that can grow to 25 ft tall.

Habitat: Grows in sun to part shade in moist areas with poor soil conditions.

Foliage: Alternate oval yellow-green leaves and has red, brown to gray, green bark.

Flowers: Catkins form before the leaves in May through July. Small brown pinecones (nutlet) stay on tree all winter.

Natural Habitat: Moist areas from low to high elevations.
